Not All Air Filters Are Not The Same! How to Pick the Right One

How often do you think about your HVAC system’s air filter? Do you change them regularly?  Did you know they come in different materials that play a significant role in how effectively they promote indoor air quality? Since indoor air pollution is one of the top five environmental health risks, it’s important to make smart decisions when choosing air filters for your Raleigh home.

Air filters are vital for your HVAC unit to circulate clean air throughout your home. By learning about the different kinds of available air filters, you’ll have better indoor air quality that will help you breathe easier.

Guide to Choosing the Best Air Filter for Your Home’s HVAC System

Mechanical air filters are the most prevalent kinds of filters for use with home HVAC units. They are generally made of synthetic fibers designed to catch pollutants like dust, pet dander and other debris and prevent them from circulating in your home. These filters are designed to be used for a certain amount of time and then replaced when they get dirty.

Mechanical air filters are rated for efficiency by a MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating. The lower the MERV rating, the less expensive and less effective the air filter.

The most common types of mechanical air filters include:

  • Fiberglass – This thin, inexpensive material does a poor job of filtering pollutants from the air. Fiberglass filters remove less than 10% of pollutants and have the lowest MERV rating of 1-4.
  • Pleated – With a MERV rating of 10-14, pleated filters remove up to 45% of air pollutants and cost about $10 each. Look for filters that have at least 18 pleats per foot for the best results.
  • High Efficiency Air Filters – These are the best filters for residential use. With a MERV rating of 14-16, high efficiency filters capture tiny particles of dust, mold, and other irritants. Made from synthetic polyester fibers, these filters can be treated with a chemical that kills bacteria and fungi on contact. They capture about 85% of air pollutants and reduce wear and tear on your HVAC system.
  • HEPA Filters — High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters offer the best filtration at 98%. However, HEPA filters require more airflow than a standard HVAC system can generate. HEPA filters are only for use with whole-home air filtration systems or single room air purifiers.
