How Often You Should Run Your Air Purifier

Home and office air purifiers provide superior indoor air quality (IAQ) and improve health. They reduce symptoms of allergies, asthma, and even eczema. While there is no doubt about the benefits of air purifiers, there are many questions.

  • How often should I run my air purifier?
  • When is the best time to run an air purifier?
  • How long does an air purifier take to work?
  • Do I need an air purifier for each room?

This blog addresses these questions and more, so you can make an informed decision about when to run your air purifier.

When is the best time to run an air purifier?

The good news is that air purification systems are designed to run for long periods of time. While each model may have varying specifications, it’s generally safe to run air purifiers 24 hours a day.

Keep in mind that air contaminants are introduced continuously through ductwork, doors and windows, pets, and people moving about. For those who have allergies, asthma, eczema, or immunity issues, it’s best to run air purifiers pretty much nonstop. Just remember to change or clean air filters regularly for maximum effectiveness.

Another option is to run the system on low or turn it off during the day if no one is home. This may help prolong the life of your air purifier. It can also make your air purifier work harder to clean the air once it is turned back on.

How long does an air purifier take to work?

Depending on the area, your air purifier should be able to clean the air in a relatively short amount of time. It generally takes between 30 minutes and a couple of hours for a system to clean a room. If you leave an air purifier running on low during “off” hours, it takes less time. If you shut it off completely, it will take longer when turned on again.

Do I need an air purifier for each room?

For maximum IAQ, it’s ideal to have a small air purifier for each room—especially bedrooms. Any room you spend a lot of time in should have clean air to breathe. Sleeping involves deep breathing, so it’s important to have good IAQ at night.

In more open areas, a larger air purifier can do the trick. When shopping, be sure to read the specifications for each system to see how much square footage they can optimally clean.
