Why Is My Furnace Leaking?

Temperatures are starting to dip low enough in North Carolina that your furnace runs to keep your home warm, especially at night. When you first turned on your furnace this heating season, you probably gave it a quick once over. You listened for strange sounds, sniffed around for offensive odors (besides the normal first-time start-up smells), and changed the furnace filter for a fresh start.

Now, a few weeks later, you may be surprised to see your furnace has a puddle of water around it. This is strange, especially because your furnace doesn’t use water to operate. Uncover the possible reasons why your furnace is leaking and what to do about it.

Reasons for a Leaky Furnace

If any of the following problems are happening with your furnace, it may be time to call for repairs.

  • No condensation pan: As their name suggests, modern condensing furnaces produce condensation. If you don’t have a properly installed condensate pan and drain, this moisture could drip out onto the floor.
  • Cracked heat exchanger: To accomplish unprecedented efficiency, condensing furnaces squeeze as much heat as possible out of the fuel source before exhausting combustion fumes to the exterior. This requires a second heat exchanger. If cracked, the heat exchanger could leak condensation around the base of your furnace.
  • Clogged condensate drain: High-efficiency furnaces share the central air conditioner’s condensate drain. Even if it’s properly in place, the drain may become plugged up by algae or other debris. Over time, the pan fills and the condensate overflows onto the floor beneath your furnace. This could be the reason your furnace is leaking.
  • Leaky humidifier: If your home features a whole-house humidifier, the unit is connected to the furnace to deliver moisture evenly throughout your entire home. The humidifier and plumbing system are integrated to make operation effortless on your part. Of course, if the humidifier clogs or cracks, the resulting puddle on the floor could create the illusion that your furnace is leaking.
  • Leaky plumbing: It’s quite possible for plumbing to run through the basement or utility closet that houses your furnace. If a pipe starts leaking, it could easily create a puddle near your furnace. Likewise, a backed up floor drain near the furnace could also result in pooling water.

What to Do If Your Furnace is Leaking

Don’t simply mop up the leak and assume all is well. The puddle is a sign that something’s wrong, whether with your furnace, whole-house humidifier, or plumbing. Plus, a cracked heat exchanger could introduce toxic carbon monoxide into your home. This means, to matter the reason why your furnace is leaking, the problem warrants a repair from a qualified technician.
