Why Won’t My Furnace Turn On?

There are quite a few possible causes here, ranging from a total breakdown to a simple mistake. The key is to know what to look for! Let’s start at the top and work our way down:

  • Thermostat error. It might seem goofy, or even a bit embarrassing, but we’ve actually handled quite a few repair calls where the problem was the furnace simply wasn’t set correctly. Be sure to check over your thermostat carefully when you’re having an issue. Is it set to “on” and “heat?” If not, there you go!
  • Breaker failure. It’s a good idea to take a quick trip to your electrical panel (breaker box, same thing) and ensure your breaker didn’t flip. If it did, you may be having an electrical issue or the electrical load you’re placing on the breaker is too much.
  • Faulty thermostat. Another possibility is that your thermostat itself has become damaged, or is malfunctioning. If you’ve had an outage recently, it may have simply reset itself, causing a similar problem to our first point. It is possible that the thermostat is too old, or was damaged by an impact that went unnoticed.
  • Extinguished pilot. Many issues can cause your pilot to fail if you’re using a gas or oil furnace. Usually it’s a simple matter of relighting the pilot and trying the furnace again. But if you’re having issues with the pilot light itself, you’ll need the assistance of a trained professional to get the furnace repair you need.

Prevent Furnace Flaws with Routine Maintenance

Hands-down, the best way to ensure your furnace never encounters any of these issues is to make absolutely sure it gets the care it needs! Professional maintenance is the key to better energy-efficiency, a longer lifespan for your heating system, and an overall improved performance throughout the season.
